Evaluation of Qualifications

If you are an internationally educated accountant interested in becoming a CMA in Ontario, your first step is to have your university degree transcripts evaluated by CMA Ontario. You can do this whether you are resident inside Canada or outside Canada. This service is free.

CMA Ontario evaluates transcripts from recognized educational institutions only. These are institutions that are considered by CMA Ontario to be equivalent to Canadian universities. You can contact CMA Ontario’s Accreditation Department before you send your transcripts for evaluation to find out if your university is recognized. You need to provide the name of your educational institution, the name of your degree, and the date you graduated.

If CMA Ontario is unfamiliar with your university or your degree, you will receive information about how you can have your degree assessed by an international academic credential evaluation service.

Have Your Documents Translated

If your transcripts are not in English or French, you need to have them translated and certified by your university or by a certified translator. A certified translator is one who is a member of a professional translator’s organization. The certified translator may be in Canada, your home country, or another country. To find a certified translator in Ontario, see Contacts and Resources.

Submit University Transcripts

To submit your transcripts, fill out the Transcript Evaluation Cover Sheet (PDF) and mail or fax it with a copy of your transcripts and translations to CMA Ontario’s Accreditation Department. If you have been asked to have your degree evaluated by an international credential evaluation service, include their report with your transcripts.

CMA Ontario will review your courses and grades to determine if you have met the degree requirement and the prerequisite studies requirement. You may be granted advanced standing for some or all of the CMA prerequisite topics. If CMA Ontario is unfamiliar with a course, you may be asked to provide a university syllabus or course calendar from your university describing the courses you completed. If this document is not in English or French, you will need to have it translated.

Transcript Evaluation Report

Within three weeks of receiving your transcripts and other documents, CMA Ontario will mail your Transcript Evaluation Report to you. This report will tell you if your university degree meets the CMA degree requirement. It will also tell you the CMA prerequisite studies topics that you have successfully completed and will let you know which courses, if any, you need to complete to be eligible to write the CMA Entrance Examination. If there are no changes to the prerequisite studies topics, the evaluation is valid for two years.
