Hi there,
I am thinking of doing some volunteer job in Toronto while waiting for the immigration to proceed. However I found that for some of the community services like YMCA, they require the volunteer applicants to get the police record check with the application. I have no idea where should I go to get that record from and how much should I pay for that? I have heard that the fees of getting the record varies in different police stations. Is that true? Hope someone who have the experiences can help me out. Thanks!

Hello Poplars,
Thank you for sharing your situation with us. According to the Toronto Police Services, in Toronto, there is only one location where this can be done and that is at:

You can call the Toronto Police Reference Check Office here:

According to this department, the cost to process police record checks for volunteers is $16.05.
We suggest that you contact them directly regarding your own situation and to confirm the process and how much it will cost.

quote: I am thinking of doing some volunteer job.
The YMCA and the Red Cross has the same policy requiring a criminal check for all volunteers. I volunteered for the YMCA and the Red Cross in the USA and I had to get a criminal record check for both of them. Even volunteer coaches have to get their record checked, because it is required by law for anyone that works with children or vulnerable people.
It is even more invasive for pre-employment background checks. When I changed jobs, my new company ran a background check on me that was so detailed that I was shocked. Pre Employment Screen Background Checks included Verification of identity, SSN, employment history, education, and address history. Checks State and county criminal records, sexual offender, terrorist watch, credit check, bankruptcy. (Federal criminal records available.) Matched by name & birthday
When I asked about it, my new employer gave me handout with their explanation. A background criminal public records search includes information about the criminal offenses in the background of a person. This information can be very relevant, and you should be aware of any past criminal activity so that you understand all of the risks involved. Not having information that is available by doing a background criminal public records search can be a very costly mistake that could have serious, or even fatal, consequences for your family, employees, business, and others.
Since the 9/11 attack in N.Y., I guess many companies require similar pre-employment background checks. I wanted the job, and I did not have anything to hid, so I agreed to getting the record check.
