My daughter was born in the USA 7 weeks ago, she is now in Canada (came last week) to live permanently. She is, by birth and by virtue of my citizenship, a Canadian Citizen.
My question however is: Is she entitled to be covered by OHIP immediately?
I am currently applying for her to get a citizenship certificate to prove her citizenship, however, is there anyway i could go about applying for OHIP or getting OHIP coverage. It is a pretty urgent matter, because at 2 months, she needs to get about 3 "standard" immunizations which could cost me $300 not to mention the doctor's appointment.
If it isn't possible to get her OHIP coverage, is it possible to get OHIP to "pay back" whatever i spend if i keep the receipts?
Please let me know how i should proceed in this case. For all i know, the citizenship certificate can take 1-2 months to get in, and then until i apply for OHIP, it could be 6 months before my daughter is covered (which is no good for me). Isn't it my understanding that because she is a Canadian Citizenship by birth, she should be covered by OHIP from birth?

You should apply for OHIP for her immediately, do not wait until Citizenship documents come through.
An OHIP representative will be able to best answer your questions of whether or not she will be covered immediately or have to wait the 3 month waiting period. I don't think that OHIP will pay back money spent while she is not covered, but a Ministry representative can best answer that question for you.
Call the Ministry of Health infoline directly: 416-314-5518 or 1-800-268-1154 (Toll-free in Ontario only).
But, either way, don't delay, start the OHIP application process immediately.
