Hi Community.

Note the procedure leading to obtaining Canadian citizenship has been changed.

An "Act to amend the Citizenship Act..." was adopted by both House of Commons and Senate and got the Royal Assent on June 19,2014.

At a first glance, the rules now are that a citizenship applicant i)must physically spend 4 years of consecutive 6 in Canada (183 days as minimum during each of these 4 years), ii)must present a proof of filing a tax return in Canada in respect of 4 taxation years within the said 6 years, iii)must pass a language test and a citizenship test unless s/he is 65 or more years old. Above that, an applicant should "intend, if granted citizenship, to continue to reside in Canada" which sounds a bit unclear.

My feeling is that potential applicants should discuss these amendments with their lawyers and/or follow comments in mass media.

For the text of this new Act (known also as Bill-C24)see: http://www.parl.gc.ca/content/hoc/Bills/412/Government/C-24/C-24_3/C-24_3.PDF

Good luck.

Depends when the Act is enacted. If it is enacted after you apply no problem, if before you apply, you must meet the criteria of the new Act.

Hi,

http://www.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Language=E&Mode=1&DocId=6684615&File=4&Col=1

At the above link it reads
"An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts
ASSENTED TO
19th JUNE, 2014
BILL C-24"

Does this mean the Act is enacted and has come into force?

Regards,

No, only a couple of sections dealing with "lost citizens" have been enacted.
