Hi Folks,
My PR card is under renewal process under normal processing basis. It is still around 100 days till I get my PR card. Now I have to travel outside Canada due to some business assignment on urgent basis. My intention is to enter from US in a private vehicle because I have found on CIC website that you don't need valid PR if you are coming back by private vehicle. Below is the information I got on website
" If you return in a private vehicle, like your own car

If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your own car, you do not need a permanent resident card. You can use your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) instead.

You would have been given these documents:
•If you applied from overseas: at the same time as your visa
•If you applied from within Canada: when you landed at your local visa office

An officer will ask you questions to make sure you meet all of the residency requirements before they allow you to come back to Canada."

I would like to ask what kind of question the officer may ask & also request you all if somebody had same experience as mine, please share.
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Hello Andy,

Thank you for sharing your situation and questions with us.

We hope that others who are in a similar situation can share their suggestions and experiences with you.

We do not have any information regarding what the officer will ask you.

However, in terms of what the officer may ask, they may want to know that you are meeting your residency requirements. Basically, the onus is on each individual permanent resident to meet their own residency requirements. This means that it is up to you to ensure that you are meeting the residency requirement within each 5 year period and that you are also keeping track of your time spent inside and outside Canada.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fulfilling your residency obligation.

In terms of proofs either to prove that you were in Canada or that you were outside of Canada you may want to keep:

*Airplane tickets/boarding passes
*Bus tickets/boarding passes
*Accomodation/Apartment information such as Lease, Rent Receipts for the time that you are in Canada
*Hotel receipts

And any other documents that can prove the time you were present in Canada in the event that you were questioned by an immigration officer and asked to provide proof of your time in/outside of Canada.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hi,

in addition to what Anna wrote, you may also want to keep expired passports in case they have any relevant stamps in them.
When I once forgot to bring my PR card when I re-entered Canada, the border officer was also satisfied when I showed him my Ontario health card, my Canadian debit card and the driver's licence. This is of course just an indication, but no proof that I reside in Canada. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the officer will accept those documents.
In my experience, most officers are happy if you bring whatever you have to support your case. This can also include some kind of proof that (and when) you applied for a new PR card.
As you wrote, in your case it is probably best to enter Canada in a private vehicle as the airline may deny you boarding if you tell them that you are a PR but you currently don't have a PR card. Chances are they don't want to get into trouble.
