English as a Second Language (ESL)

Language training programs not only teach you how to read, speak or write in English or French, they can also help to orient you to the Canadian way of life.

How can I improve my English?
English as a Second Language classes are offered through the public and separate (or Catholic) boards of education, community non-profit agencies and colleges.

How do I enroll in ESL classes?
To enroll you must generally have your language level evaluated (assessed). This is a free service provided by certain community groups in Ontario.

There is a program called LINC Home Study.

I'm a refugee claimant. Where can I go to learn English?
If you are a refugee claimant, you cannot go to the Language Assessment Centre to have your English level assessed. However, you are still eligible for regular ESL classes.

How can I learn French as a Second Language?
French as a Second Language programs are offered in non-profit language and cultural organizations, post-secondary institutions and French public and catholic school boards.
