Your Path to Becoming a CMA

This section of the website will help you determine your individual path to becoming a Certified Management Accountant in Ontario.

The requirements for accreditation as a CMA include:

  • A recognized university degree and 17 specific prerequisite studies topics in accounting and management

CMA Ontario will evaluate your degree and let you know if you have completed the prerequisite topics. Once you have met this requirement, you will be eligible to write the CMA Entrance Examination.
  • Successful completion of the CMA Entrance Examination

The CMA Entrance Examination is a multiple-choice examination that tests your knowledge of the CMA prerequisite studies topics. You need to pass this examination to be eligible to take the CMA Strategic Leadership Program.
  • Successful completion of the CMA Strategic Leadership Program

The CMA Strategic Leadership Program is a part-time study program that is completed over a two-year period.
  • 24 months of practical work experience as a management accountant

The practical work experience requirement is completed at the same time as you are completing the part-time Strategic Leadership Program.

Depending on your education and professional affiliation, you may be eligible for exemption from some of these requirements.
