Steps to Employment is a series of workshop manuals, ready for use in settlement and integration programs in Ontario. Each workshop manual includes materials for twenty-five hours of orientation, and twenty-five hours of occupation-specific language training, for a complete ten days of full-time instruction.

The Steps to Employment workshops are unique in that they target newcomers with basic proficiency in English, integrate orientation and sector-specific language training, and are compatible with topic and level outcomes in the LINC Curriculum Guidelines. The language tasks for the workshops are based on the outcomes for LINC 4 and 5, which are equivalent to CLB 4, 5 (reading, writing) and 6 (listening, speaking). There are activities for all skill areas in each unit.

Although the materials are designed to enrich the LINC program in Ontario, employers, recruiters, unions and trainers who wish to provide newcomers with an intensive, sector-specific language training workshop will also find the materials useful.

What participants have said about Steps to Employment...

"I learned a lot about my sector, such as what kinds of companies there are, where the market trends go. The information in the workshop was great."

"I received a lot of information about my sector and about the job market. It was very useful, because I [became] familiarized with specific terminology."

"The most helpful thing [about the workshop] is that we have now a lot of knowledge about the field and we can be oriented on future jobs."
