How can I Renew My Canadian Passport?

You can renew your passport in 5 steps. These steps include filling out an application form, providing references and paying fees.

Before you apply for a new passport, check to make sure you are eligible to renew your passport.

Step 1: Complete the Application Form

You can download a copy of the adult passport application form from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If your old passport contains a visa you would like to keep, make sure you check the related box in Section 2 of your passport application form.

If you go to a Canada Post location, you can pick up a free application form and for a fee you can use their passport review service.

There is a different application process you must follow if are applying to renew a child’s passport.

Step 2: Prepare Passport Photos and Include Your Old Passport

In your application package, you need to include your old passport and 2 identical passport photos.

Step 3: References

You must have two people who have known you for at least 2 years serve as your references.

Important Note: Most family members are not allowed to be references when renewing your passport.

Step 4: Submit Your Application and Pay the Fees

Submitting Your Application in Person

You can submit your application in person at a passport office or receiving agent (Service Canada or Canada Post).

The application fee changes depending on certain factors, such as if you are applying from in or outside Canada, your age and other factors.

You can pay for your application by credit card, debit card, or with a certified cheque or money order. Receiving agents can accept cash payments in exact change.

Important Notes:

  • If you are paying your fee with a certified cheque or money order, it should be made payable to “Receiver General for Canada.”
  • If you are submitting an application from outside Canada, check with your local Government of Canada passport office to see which payment types they accept.
  • Someone else can submit your application for you, but you must include a letter saying that you permit them to do this. Also, they will not be allowed to pay the application fee with a debit card.

Submitting Your Application by Mail in Canada or the United States

To submit your application via mail, send your complete application, including the fee, to:

Step 5: Receive your Passport

If you applied by mail, your new passport and other documents will be mailed to you at the address you provided on your application.

If you applied in person, you can be given a pick up date when you submit your application. You can also request to receive your new passport in the mail. Someone else can pick up your document, but they must present a letter signed by you giving them permission to do so and present a valid piece of identification for themselves.
